Privacy
Kaia is an iPhone app that records your drives. This page explains what information Kaia uses, why, who else is involved, and how you can delete it. If anything here is unclear, email hello@trykaia.app.
The short version
- Your drives are stored on your iPhone.
- An account is optional. If you create one, our server keeps your profile, your friends, and what you send them.
- Kaia's notes are written by an AI service from summaries of your drives, not from your routes, photos or music.
- We don't sell your information, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.
Stored on your iPhone
To record and show your drives, Kaia keeps the following on your phone: your routes, speed, distance, motion and elevation readings, the places and cars you save, photos you add to a drive, the music that played, weather at the time, and the notes Kaia writes. This information is not uploaded to us. Deleting the app removes it.
If you create an account
You can use Kaia without an account. If you sign in (with Sign in with Apple), we keep the following on our server so friends can find you and you can send each other things:
- Your account: an identifier from Apple, plus the name and username you choose. We don't ask Apple for your email address.
- Your Kaia card: totals like miles, drives and roads driven, and, if you leave them on, your favourite road, current car, longest drive and the names of roads you've driven. You can turn the optional parts off in the app. Other people signed in to Kaia can see your name, username and card.
- Your friends and friend requests.
- Things you send friends: routes, meet-up plans and notes, kept until you delete your account.
- AI usage: a daily count of how much you've used Kaia's notes, so we can keep costs fair.
Sharing with friends
You decide what to share and who with. Before a route leaves your phone, its first and last stretches are removed, along with the parts near places you've saved, such as home. A meet-up shares the place you pick and the time. Anything you send through Messages, AirDrop or Instagram is handled by those services.
Kaia's notes (AI)
Kaia uses Anthropic's Claude to write notes about your drives and to answer your questions. To do that it receives summaries: place names you've saved, road names, dates and times, distances, durations, weather, and the questions you ask. For a place without a name it may receive an approximate area, to within about 100 metres. It does not receive your recorded routes, your photos or your music. If you're signed in, these requests pass through our server, which records only usage counts. Anthropic processes them under its commercial terms.
Other services Kaia uses
Some features need information from outside services. Each one receives only what it needs for that feature:
- Apple: sign-in, and Apple Maps for place and road names, search, directions and map images. These receive locations or search text.
- Open-Meteo: weather. Receives an approximate location.
- OpenStreetMap (Overpass): speed limits and road signs. Receives the map areas around your drives and plans.
- Amazon Web Services (Open Data terrain tiles): hills and elevation for planning. Receives map tile areas.
- Spotify: only if you connect it, to show the songs that played on a drive.
- Supabase: hosts our server and account sign-in.
Permissions on your iPhone
- Location: to record drives. With “Always” access, Kaia can notice a drive starting and record it while the app is closed.
- Motion & Fitness: to tell when you're driving and to measure braking and cornering.
- Photos: to show photos you took on a drive, and to save images you choose to share.
- Media & Apple Music: optional, to show the songs that played.
- Notifications: to tell you about saved drives and Kaia's notes. These are sent from your phone, not from our server.
You can change any of these in iPhone Settings at any time.
Keeping and deleting your information
- On your phone: delete any drive, place, car or photo in the app, or delete the app to remove everything.
- Your account: in the app, go to your profile and choose Delete account. This removes your profile, card, friends, everything you've sent or received through our server, and your usage counts. Things a friend already received stay on their phone.
- Signing out removes your sign-in from the phone. It doesn't delete your drives or your account.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@trykaia.app and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're in the EU or UK you can also complain to your local data protection authority. California residents have the same rights under the CCPA; we don't sell or share personal information for advertising.
Security
Information sent between the app and our server is encrypted in transit. Sign-in details are kept in your iPhone's Keychain. Only you and the friends you add can send you things.
Children
Kaia isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For significant changes we'll also tell you in the app.
